You Love To See It: Volume 03

My favorite thing this week was the surprising and delightful WNBA launch by the Top Shot team, but plenty of my friends will be talking about that already, so I’ll focus on something else. Tom Sachs and Gary V both managed to pull off impressive stunts that connect the NFT Metaverse and the real world.
For Gary, it was incentivizing people to pre-order bulk quantities of his new book in exchange for a mysterious, unknown future NFT. Gary’s book is now the #1 best seller on Amazon. For Tom, it was the successful launch of real-life rockets he built with his team to resemble the NFT creations that members of the Tom Sachs Rocket Factory community designed online. I absolutely love the creativity of both these developments and look forward to seeing more unique ways of bringing our strange little niche of art and community to the masses.

It’s no secret that my favorite thing this week was the historic NBA Top Shot release of WNBA Top Shot moments! I love that they respect and recognize the talent and skills of athletes — both men and women alike — and their excitement was reflected via the social and marketing deployed.
More importantly, it’s thrilling to bring even more visibility to the WNBA and honor them through sports collectibles. It was also fun to welcome new collectors into Top Shot because of it and I can’t wait for the day we have enough moment range to have picks for fantasy leagues. LFG!

My favorite thing this week was absolutely last weekend’s Bored Ape Yacht Club Toronto meetup. We’ve had a great Canadian BAYC discord going for a number of months, but it was so much fun to finally put faces to the many names I’ve gotten to know over time. There are many reasons why I feel lucky to have found the BAYC, but the community is definitely at the top of the list. We’re all very aware of how lucky we are and how this could all go away anytime, but we’re enjoying the ride together.

Definitely catching up with Jacob Eisenberg for the podcast was my favorite thing this week. It had been two months since we last recorded but it felt like a whole NFT lifetime had passed us by. It was great to talk about the future of Top Shot and the WNBA as well as discussing some of the challenges in his day-to-day work.

My charity NFT project, Stay Strong VN, sold out…twice!!! The generosity and support from the community have been overwhelming and inspiring. I’m so thankful to everyone who bought one, of course, but also to my Packrip Media teammates for their help, as well as everyone who liked, shared, or even just checked the project out. $1300 for charity later, we have made a real difference.

For me, and I believe the majority of the crew, my favorite thing that came out of this week was the addition of the WNBA to Topshot. I hope we get to see more WNBA Moments and content soon. Also this week the Here For The Moments crew had a great podcast episode with Tatyanna Dumas.

Like Nick and Steve my favorite thing this week was the WNBA getting into the Top Shot community. I also enjoyed the fact I actually got a pack for the first time that feels like a long time. But that's not the only thing I liked this week.
I also found out that VISA is helping out the NFT community. They also said it is a promising medium for fan engagement. They also bought a CRYPTOPUNK which I think is pretty cool a big creditor is getting in on NFTS. They also made a little brochure for people giving information about NFTs for new people who don’t know.

I want to give a special shout-out to the projects of my fellow Packrip Media members. Paul’s NFTagram and Chris’s Stay Strong VN. If there’s one perk of being involved in Packrip Media it’s the great people and seeing the awesome work we can do when we support each other. And of course the WNBA on Top Shot, that is huge news! Every week there’s something new to look forward to in this community, it’s like Christmas all the time.

If you’ve seen me out on Twitter you’ve probably seen some salt about the Bored Ape Mutant drop. Please know, I think BAYC IS the best team in the NFT world, maybe tied with Pixel Vault. A few things I loved about the MAYC drop were the community engagement, the twitter spaces, the market volatility both up and down on Saturday, and the sense of community that all of that brought out in our industry.
Twitter on Saturday was a hell of a lot of fun. However, I think at 20,000 that a lot of the art isn’t great, the snot/toxic waste that is dripping down on a majority of the apes just isn’t my bag. I also don’t like the way the Bored Dogs were left completely out of the picture and the way BAYC said owning a mutant is akin to owning an OG ape. This devastated both floors.
Don’t get me wrong, a lot of the speculation was built into those floor rises on Saturday but the club just got A LOT bigger, and dogs just got a lot rarer. Full disclosure I own one, but at only 9600 compared to 30,000, I think dogs will have a lot of future potential. Overall, love what you love, and buy the art you like to buy. I’ll do the same! Love y’all!
